ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (AP) - Halifax County schools got a visit from state officials and education leaders who want to know how the schools are doing just short of a year after the state took them over.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that members of the State Board of Education met in the county Wednesday, talking with the local school board and touring schools. Among those who visited was Gov. Beverly Perdue, who says she's pleased to hear students discuss high expectations.
It's been 10 months since Superior Court Judge Howard Manning determined that Halifax schools needed state oversight and called for the state to work in the poor district for three years.
Among the goals of the new superintendent: staff improvement and higher attendance rates by students.
