A leader in education locally and across the state fights for her life tonight. Kathy Taft's in intensive care at WakeMed in Raleigh.
She's been there since Saturday morning when her sister found her after she missed a planned breakfast date. The attack occurred inside a home on Cartier Dr. in Raleigh.
Neighbors say the home belonged to her boyfriend, John Geil. He was in Florida at the time of the incident and is flying back.
Taft lives in Greenville and currently serves on the North Carolina Board of Education. Before that, she served on Pitt County's Board.
Investigators are not saying much about what they found at the scene or who is responsible for the assault.
The assault on 62-year-old Kathy Taft left her neighbors searching for answers.
"She's been involved in the school board here and the board of education for the state and is well-liked and well-known. A lot of people are just asking questions about what happened," said Bill McConnell, neighbor and friend of Taft.
As the events unfold involving Kathy Taft the community is in shock. Especially at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where it was only recently that she finished a term on the governing board that works for outreach ministries.
"We at St. Paul’s are in shock that one of our family members who is so vibrant and so much a part of so many peoples lives in so many ways, can have this happen. All I can do is ask for prayers for her and for her family,” said Bob Hudak, pastor and friend of Taft.
Father Bob Hudak and his wife went to WakeMed Saturday night where she was in critical condition.
Taft's neighbors say the news is hard to take.
"I could hardly keep the tears out of my eyes to tell my wife what was wrong," said McConnell.
Right now, the community waits on word about Taft’s recovery. They have her in their thoughts.
"The whole neighborhood is sending love and prayers to all of you, we will be praying for you every day and we miss you," said the McConnells.
Raleigh Police have spent the weekend in the neighborhood where she was attacked, trying to find the person responsible.
Anyone with information that might help police detectives was asked to call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-HELP
