MONROE, N.C. (AP) - A judge has ruled that most of a search warrant issued against a former North Carolina prosecutor must be made public.
Judge Gary Trawick ruled that prosecutors have 48 hours to release the warrant, a sworn statement and items seized from former district attorney Joel Brewer.
Few details about the warrant came out during a hearing on Monday.
Brewer's attorneys wanted the warrant sealed, saying that releasing information could embarass others named in the document. They also said the former lead prosecutor for Person and Caswell counties might not get a fair trial if the information is released.
Senior deputy attorney general Jim Coman says this warrant should be public just like any other. He says Brewer is just trying to avoid his own personal embarassment.
