RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina prisoners can write and try to publish manuscripts after the state and the American Civil Liberties Union reached a settlement.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday the legal foundation of the ACLU of North Carolina announced the settlement Monday with the state Correction Department. The ACLU had filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Victor L. Martin, who says one of his novels was confiscated and destroyed, although officials say it was returned to him.
The Correction Department had said the novels violated department policy against prisoner-operated businesses.
The 34-year-old Martin has several theft-related convictions. He's being housed at Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield and is to be released in 2018.
