RALEIGH, N.C. - A local member of the State Board of Education is clinging to life this morning as a result of injuries she sustained in an attack this weekend.
Friends of Kathy Taft tell us she had brain surgery Saturday after her sister discovered her brutally beaten at a home in Raleigh.
Intial reports this morning said she had passed away, now police are saying she is still alive.
Shortly after 11 this morning, Raleigh Police released a statenment saying Taft had died. A few minutes later, they retracted that statement saying she was still alive.
We don't know her exact condition, but one friend earlier today said family was scheduled to meet with a neurosurgion this morning.
Meanwhile, the person responsible for attacking Taft has not been found.
It all started Saturday.
Taft was staying with at former boyfriend John Geil's house in Raleigh.
He was in Florida at the time.
Now he's back in Raleigh to be with the family.
A long-time friend of Taft's from high school says it's not unusual for her to stay at Geil's home while in Raleigh for school board meetings.
Police blocked off the street where it happened for three days but that is now back open.
It's not clear whether this was a random act of violence or if she was targeted.
Raligh Police have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood, where Taft was attacked.
