RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's unemployment rate hit a record 11.1 percent in January.
The Employment Security Commission on Wednesday reported that the state's unemployment rate for January was above its pre-recession high for a twelfth straight month.
The jobless rate rose 0.2 percentage points from the revised 10.9 percent in December.
January's unemployment rate is the highest since states revised the way they calculate unemployment in 1976.
Prior to this recession, the state's previous peak unemployment rate was 9.7 percent in March 1983, a level topped in February 2009 and exceeded ever since.
Unemployment in January increased by 8,300 workers to more than 500,000.
