RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A racially charged debate about school diversity in North Carolina has resulted in the superintendent of the Wake County schools being placed on administrative leave until his resignation is effective.
Multiple media outlets reported that 56-year-old Del Burns will be available for consultation and will be paid until his resignation is effective June 30. The chief academic officer of the 140,000-student system will become acting superintendent.
The move Tuesday comes after the board voted last week to end a policy of maintaining diversity by assigning students to schools based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
Burns announced his resignation last month, saying he could not in good conscience carry out the directives of the new school board majority.
