GREENVILLE, N.C. - Dean Newman is behind bars tonight after assaulting a Morehead City police officer.
Police say they were responding to a breaking and entering at the Jim Dandy convenience store.
The officer approached a suspicious vehicle and the driver, Newman, took off.
After a short chase, the sergeant caught him, but Newman reached for the officer's gun.
A struggle ensued and the sergeant sprayed him with pepper spray.
Three others face charges for the breaking and entering.
They're all in the Carteret County Jail under bond.
