PAMLICO COUNTY, N.C. - Governor Perdue is calling for a change in the way our state views the importance of education.
Perdue was at Pamlico Community College this afternoon to discuss her new "Ready, Set, Go Initiative".
"This isn't just about graduating our young people from high school, it's also about graduating our young people from the community college and the university syatem," said North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue.
Perdue spoke to community and education leaders from across the east today about the importance of not just getting through school but being prepared for the future.
"It's our responsibility to prepare those students, while we have them in our institutions with the core set of skills that they can use to transition and to grapple with this change that comes quickley because of what technology has done," said Perdue.
Perdue believes her new initiative called "Career-college, Ready, Set, Go" will help refocus our state on the importance of an education and prepare them for tomorrow's workforce.
"I think many of our students are coming out ready for the future but there's also, to a certain degree, lower expectations for some kids that possibly that they don't need a high school diploma or they can go into the labor market and be successful," said Perdue.
Pamlico County Schools Superintendent James Coon says that simply isn't acceptable if North Carolina's work force want's to compete in a global market in the future, "Society as a whole has to come to the realization that the standards are higher and kids have to achieve at higher levels."
And that means making sure kids get the most out of their education.
