An Onslow County man who shot his wife has died.
Sheriff Ed Brown tells Nine On Your Side that Curtis Hargrove died around 10:00 Friday night.
Hargrove shot his wife and himself on Tuesday at the Alzheimers Related Care Center on Onslow Pines Road.
Hargrove's condition was upgraded to serious condition early Thursday morning but returned to critical by Thursday afternoon.
His wife, Harriett, had been a resident of this facility since January and he visited her every day.

LATEST
------
Onslow County Sheriffs office says Hargrove did leave a note behind, with details on how to move forward with arrangements once he and his wife were gone.
Neighbors are in awe about the news, and say they are having a tough time understanding what brought Curtis to that point.
Sheriff Ed Brown says murder is murder and that no reason is good enough.
"We don't have a law in place in the state of North Carolina that allows for mercy killing," said the Sheriff, "Or one that allows for you to take the law into your own hands."
Brown says they are waiting to determine Hargrove's condition before any charges are filed.
UPDATE

According to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the suspected shooter Joseph Hargrove, has been downgraded to critical condition. He had been upgraded to serious condition early Thursday morning, but returned to critical by Thursday afternoon.

------
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Violence at an Alzheimer's facility ends with one of its patients dead.

It happened late last night in Onslow County.

Deputies say an 80 year old man walked inside the Alzheimers Related Care Center on Onslow Pines Road shot his wife twice in the head and then turned the gun on himself.

This is certainly something no one would expect.

Deputies we talked with said they had never seen anything like this in Onslow County.

That's just one reason people here are so shocked.

Onslow County Sheriffs deputies got the call just after ten o'clock yesterday evening.

Deputies went into the room, the victim's room, and found an eighty year old woman shot twice in the head.

That woman was 80 year old Harriet Hargrove. Deputies also found her husband Joseph Hargrove with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
He is still in critical condition at new hanover regional medical center.

Captain Donny Worrell said the shock here was palpable.

They called them the cute little old couple. This isn't something he sees often.

Which makes distinguishing a motive tough.

But a lack of security at facilities like this make security a concern.

In a statement released this afternoon, the alzheimers facility said: We are greatly saddened by the unexpected events that took place last night. The shooting of our resident by her husband was totally unexpected. Our staff was very observant of the devotion between husband and wife. We will continue to ensure the safety and care of our residents.

Now we also know Harriett had been a resident of this facility since January and that her husband visited her every day.

Capitan Worrell told me they are waiting to determine Joseph Hargrove's condition before charges are filed.
