Spring hasn't sprung, but your clocks better have. Things might feel and look a little different today as we started daylight saving time.

We waited longer for sunset and can do more during the day. It cost us only an hour of sleep.

"I'll be shopping and enjoying the extra time, enjoying the daylight," said shopper Severia Lee.

Shoppers are shopping and spring is almost here. One of the first signs of its arrival is when our clocks spring forward. That means it'll stay lighter longer.

“It's a little more bonus for people who need to get grocery shopping and fitness workout finished,” said shopper Bennett Todd.

Daylight saving initially came about to help farmers capture more light so they could work longer in the fields. Nowadays people use that little bonus to shop longer.

"I personally think business will pick up a little bit because people like to go out while there's still a good amount of daylight time. An extra hour definitely does kick in for that," said Delaware Chuck, employee at Best Buy.

"I think businesses are going to do better, I think right now when people get off of work it's dark they're ready to go home and now that they'll have more daylight I think the businesses will do better," said Sonya Trotman, Target shopper.

A study by the US Department of Energy shows that the extra hour doesn't just help businesses. It saves energy.

The added sunlight helps cuts the amount of electricity used each day by half a percent across the country. That's enough to power 122,000 homes for a year. Some feel the extra hour also provides something you can't see.

"Well it's a good time, a psychological boost from the long winter we've had from the snow and the rain, to be out in the yard doing yard work {slide} just enjoy daylight savings time," said Best Buy shopper, Willard Joyner.

Helping farmers, saving energy, and more free time? Perhaps it’s a fair tradeoff for losing an hour of sleep.

Hopefully, by now you've changed all your clocks. Don't worry. You won't have to do it again until we fall back on November 7th.
