COROLLA, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina coastal county wants to build bathrooms at an ocean access, a move opposed by the owners of a nearby lighthouse.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reported that Currituck County plans to build public restrooms on the ocean side of N.C. 12 in Corolla. Residents have complained that visitors relieve themselves behind dunes or in bushes near beach homes because the nearest restrooms are across the highway and more than a quarter-mile away.
But the founder of the group, Outer Banks Conservationists, opposes the project. John Wilson said in a letter in January that the land should not be disturbed.
The conservation group has controlled the lighthouse since 2006, when a federal judge ruled that the group and not the county owned it.
