The battle over keeping prescription drugs out of the wrong hands continues. Law enforcement set up shop at Pitt County Memorial Hospital today, working with folks there in “Operation Medicine Drop”. People came out and dropped off their unused and expired medicines. Since 1999, more than 4,500 deaths have been linked to prescription drugs in our state. Officers say liquid medicines can look like juice to kids and pills can look like candy and it's important to get them out of your home.
"In law enforcement, you see a lot of, not just crime-related guns but also from accidentally overdosing on medication and so if the wrong person, elderly or a kid, gets their hands on poisonous medications or a solution, then that's not good," said Officer Kevin Station with the PCMH Police Department.
It's all part of Poison Prevention Week. Officials are holding several other drop-offs throughout the week.
