GREENVILLE, N.C. - A Camp Lejeune Marine has died as a result of a non-hostile incident while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A Camp Lejeune Marine has died as a result of a non-hostile incident while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

It happened March 14th.

26 year old Cpl. Jonathan D. Porto of Largo, Fla. was a small arms repair technician assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan. He joined the Marine Corps in March 2008. Porto was later promoted to the rank of corporal on December 1, 2009.

He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2009.

Porto's awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal.

He's survived by his wife.
