RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The ex-aide to former North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley wants a judge to dismiss all 51 corruption-related counts filed against him, arguing federal prosecutors failed to allege essential elements of bribery and extortion.
Ruffin Poole's attorney filed motions to throw out the case in advance of a deadline to file motions late last week. The documents provide the most details so far about how Poole may defend himself in a possible trial.
Poole lawyer Joe Zeszotarski said there's been no allegations showing Poole received financial benefits in exchange for taking official actions in state government. The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to comment on Tuesday.
Poole is accused of accepting trips and collecting hefty investment returns in coastal developments he helped expedite through regulatory hurdles.
