Right outside Rutherfordton, in the quiet of the country, there's a sound that wakes women up a night.
The knocks have haunted this some victims for years.
The culprit creeps in once the sun goes down, targeting at least 5 widows here.
They call him the knocker.
But to some of the victims, other names will do.
And that's not al, the phantom phone calls started about a year ago. So many times each night, even a calendar can't keep track.
The victims have tried just about everything from cameras to a deputy staking out this field, but the knocker is always one step ahead.
The sheriff here says he's listened to the victims, but no amount of extra resources can hear their problem.
One victim stopped calling 911, worried no one would believe her.
She says out here in the country, there's only one sound she longs for.
