CHARLOTTE, N.C.- A North Carolina mother has been indicted on a murder charge after two of her children died when a fire broke out at their home while authorities say she was gone.
The Charlotte Observer reported 26-year-old Orgal Opata also was indicted Monday on four counts of exposing children to fire and three counts of felony child abuse.
Two-year-old Josiah Hawthorne and 1-year-old Gabriel Hawthorne died Feb. 28. A neighbor saved their 4- and 7-year-old siblings, who are now in the custody of the county Department of Social Services. Police and prosecutors have not said where Opata was at the time
of the fire. She remains in jail on $1 million bond.
