RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina county has decided to restore insurance coverage for abortions for county employees.
Multiple media outlets reported that Wake County commissioners voted Monday to restore coverage for elective abortions that had been dropped last month.
Board member Stan Norwalk says he doesn't think the government should tell women what to do with their bodies.
County manager David Cooke had removed the coverage from the county's insurance plan last month after learning about a 1981 North Carolina Supreme Court decision that could be read to forbid counties from paying for elective abortions.
The board of commissioners voted 4-3 to override Cooke's decision.
Planned Parenthood and the America Civil Liberties Union said that court decision did not prevent counties from deciding employee benefits.
