NC teacher suspended for writing 'loser' on paper

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A middle school teacher in western North Carolina who's accused of writing the word "loser" on a student's paper has been suspended without pay for two weeks.
Multiple media outlets reported that Buncombe County schools suspended Enka Middle School teacher Rex Roland on Monday. School officials say Roland must undergo "training in professional and ethical classroom behavior" before he returns.
Parent Patty Clement had complained that Roland wrote "loser" on her 11-year-old daughter's paper in November. She says she spoke with the principal, who said she would put a stop to it. But recently, Clement says Roland wrote that her daughter got 20 percent off an assignment "for being a loser."
Roland apologized to Clement, saying it was his way of relating to the students.
