BENTONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Some elementary students in North Carolina will tour the Bentonville Battlefield as the site of the only full-scale offensive to stop Gen. William Sherman's march north prepares for its 145th anniversary.
On Wednesday, more than 300 Johnston County students are expected to visit the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, which is the largest Civil War battlefield in the state. The re-enactment of the battle is scheduled for March 20-21.
Battle scenarios are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and are the only events that require tickets. Lectures, house tours, demonstrations and other events are free.
Bentonville was one of the last major Civil War battles, with more than 80,000 troops involved. The battle covered 6,000 acres in eastern North Carolina.
