RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Former North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley's political committee has paid part of the $100,000 penalty the State Board of Elections levied against it last fall, but may not be able to pay it all.
Easley committee treasurer Joseph Newsome sent in a check this week for $5,300.
Newsome told the board that the committee has no more assets after paying some federal and state taxes, leaving it unclear how the rest of the penalty will be paid.
Easley was fined for unreported flights on planes piloted by a political ally.
Easley's committee paid a significant amount of money last year for legal expenses, including the election board investigation. A federal grand jury also is asking about Easley's actions while governor. He has not been charged with any crimes.
