LINVILLE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's Grandfather Mountain remains open despite a small rock slide at the park.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported a security officer discovered the slide on a road in the park near Linville just before midnight Wednesday.
Heavy equipment was used Thursday morning to move two of the boulders and open the road to one-way traffic. Employees directed traffic around the debris. A crew will use dynamite on the large boulders on and near the road.
A geology professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, Kate Scharer, says rock slides are not unusual this time of year, with ice in cracks loosening the rocks, allowing gravity to bring down the slabs.
