NEW BERN, N.C. - Has your home insurance gone up lately? Well, you're not alone.
A group of homeowners along the coast who are concerned about how much they are paying got together in New Bern today.
Hurricanes are a part of life here in eastern North Carolina. Along the coast, home inurance costs are booming. But should it be?
The group, NC 20 represents twenty coastal counties. They say they have been forced to pay unfair insurance premiums.
"Enough is enough we have to get organized as a 20 to 30 county group and have enough of a presence in the legislature and start bringing truth to these issues for all of North Carolina," said Allen Thomas.
Coastal North Carolina homeowners have seen insurance rate hikes three times in the past five years alone.
State Senator Marc Basnight also lives along the coast and he says insurance companies overlook the fact that hurricanes like Hugo caused more damage in places like Charlotte than the coast, "Insurance companies have been able to argue that a storm will hit our coast and do incredible damage."
He's worried people could loose their homes because they are paying so much for insurance, "The majority of coastal homes are very modest and they're not on the ocean at all."
NC 20 says families are no longer willing to back down, "This is one of those examples of wish we knew then what we know now, but please be aware we do know now and we will be watching."
Home owners should check what is know as the "dwelling value" on their policies,.
NC 20 says coastal home owners are finding they are over rated.
They say it should only be the cost to rebuild just the house.
