It's a hot button issue for many in the east. A global movement to legalize marijuana showed up in Greenville today.
At first it looks more like a picnic than a protest, but it's actually a rally ECU students put together to try and alter your perception of pot.
"It doesn't have to be something that's always portrayed as something bad,” said Junior ECU student Brittney Steffey.
Steffey was among more than a hundred students to march for marijuana at ECU's brickyard. More than 300 cities around the world held similar rallies. The one at ECU was mainly students, but organizers say it was meant to be a community wide event.
"We really wanted to have it at the park so we could get the whole city involved but that was going to cost us a thousand plus dollars in permits and fees," said Organizer Chelsea Burdette
Those involved with the walk say it's not just about legalizing marijuana, but about raising awareness about medicinal marijuana as well.
"Medical marijuana has been around for a long time, but I don't think a lot of people really know about it or the benefits of it and how bad for you pills and opiates can be. People need alternative choices," said Burdette
That alternative choice draws it's fair share of controversy. Still, supporters of the movement hope to see the marijuana legalization bill 1380 passed in congress this year.
The marijuana march is also held in Raleigh.
