San Francisco, CA - Hair salons across the nation are joining efforts to help contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf Coast, one strand at a time.
The non-profit group “Matter of Trust” is collecting hair to help out.
Here's how it works, the hair is stuffed into nylon stockings to create hair booms which absorb the oil spilled into the ocean.
“Matter of Trust” President, Lisa Gautier says salons and groomers from across the U.S. have donated more than 400,000 pounds of hair. This isn’t the first time they've used hair to sop up oil. They did the same thing in 2007, when a ship ran into San Francisco's Bay Bridge and started leaking oil.
