JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Jurors have reached a verdict in the murder trial against Former Belhaven Police Chief George Hayden.
They found Hayden guilty of First Degree Murder in the death of William Miller back in 1972.
A motion by the Defense Attorney to set aside the verdict for insufficient evidence was denied. A motion, also by the Defense Attorney to dismiss the case based on juror misconduct was also denied. But, a motion to conduct an inquiry for juror misconduct was granted and addressed.
The allegation was based on a Crimestoppers tip that the judge calls heresay. He denied the motion to set aside the verdict based on juror misconduct.
Sentencing is complete in the case. Hayden was sentenced to life in prison.
He'll file an appeal to that sentencing.
