GREENVILLE, N.C. - Over the last 25 years, the rate of obesity has doubled for children and tripled for teens, but a local program is teaching children about exercise and nutrition.
In North Carolina, the numbers are even more alarming than the national average
More than one in every four children between 12 and 18-years-old is obese.
The Viquest Center's "Challenge" program is hoping to change that.
"Keeping them encouraged is easy 'cause it's fun. We try to incorporate games and activities; everything is very interactive. I know I wouldn't want to just sit and have someone lecture to me so I try to take that into the classroom," said Chelsea Salisbury, Program Director.
The challenge program costs about 250-dollars per child.
Most of the participants go for free on scholarship from the Pitt Memorial Hospital Foundation.
