NEW BERN, N.C.- It was a beautiful morning for a boat ride, especially for some folks here in the East who got to ride along with a National Geographic Explorer.
World-renowned environmentalist, Alexandra Cousteau took a tour of the Neuse River today with more than a hundred members and friends of the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation.
The stop at Skipjack Landing in New Bern is part of her 138-day Blue Legacy Tour of North America.
She's been visiting communities and talking with local water advocacy groups, learning about the different challenges they face.
One issue affecting the Neuse River is waste run-off from hog farms and other agricultural pollutants.
"The most important thing that I find in these journeys is the commitment of the people in the community to do something about it,” said Cousteau. “Because the truth is, water is our most important resource. And knowing where it comes from, where it goes, and how we can protect it as a community, is the most important thing we can dedicate our time to."
The Blue Legacy expedition will tour more than 14,500 miles from Canada to Mexico in a bio-diesel tour bus.
