NEW BERN, N.C. - It's been eight months since the devastating earthquake rocked Haiti, killing thousands and leaving thousands more without homes.

That includes those taking refuge at Saint Josephs Home for Boys.

10 survivors from Saint Josephs were in the east, entertaining to raise money to repair their home.

"The drum:  it is something that is very meaningful to the Haitian society.  It is part of us; it is part of our culture," said Walnes Cangas.

Cangas and nine other survivors of the Haitian earthquake hope to bring that culture to the east in a performance called Resurrection from the Rubble.

"We also use dance to tell stories of our lives and stories of our country, you know, our culture.  So this is what Resurrection Dance Theatre is all about," said Cangas.

They hope the dance theatre will raise money to rebuild their home, Saint Joseph's Home for Boys, that was destroyed during the earthquake.

Bill Nathan was in the seven-story building when it came crashing down.

"When the earthquake happened, I was in the very top floor and the building went down so…I feel from seven stories," said Nathan.

Severely injured, but alive; it’s a miracle Nathan doesn't attribute to chance.

"When I was up there the only thing I remembered I said, 'God, my life is in your hands and do your will’ and I'm hear today," said Nathan.

The Resurrection Theatre performed for a packed house of more than 700 people at Garber Methodist Church in New Bern.

A display of Haitian culture that Nathan says brings them one step closer to having a home.

"Drumming, dancing, like art basically, this is part of our life at Saint Josephs and this is a way of telling people that, you know, this is what we're all about…family," said Nathan.

Something performer Didi Same-Louis couldn't agree with more.

"I'm joy…joy," said Same-Louis

They raised more than $3,000 tonight.  All of that go back to Haiti to help rebuild Saint Josephs, a cost estimated at more than $2 million

Arts and crafts made in Haiti were also on sale.  Tuesday night’s performance marks the 7th performance here in the east.

There next stop is Raleigh this Thursday.
