CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC Chapel Hill police are saying a reported hate crime on campus is a fake.
Quinn Matley said that he was burned with a hot piece of metal because he's gay but the university now says that never happened and that the report Matley filed last week isn't true.
UNC chancellor Holden Thorp issued a statement saying "it is important to recognize that incidents of harassment do occur. When they do, we take them seriously. We strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment at Carolina".
As for the false report, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety says investigators came to that conclusion through interviews with Matley and "normal methods of investigation." Matley is likely to be charged. He is still a UNC student.
