PAMLICO COUNTY, N.C. - It started with a complaint to the Pamlico Sheriffs Department that several dogs were being abused.

After a three year investigation deputies along with animal control and the Humane Society of the United States finally got enough evidence to get a warrant to search Cody Ushry’s property.

“We assisted them today with two search warrants. One was at the residence where the alleged was residing the other was at the property where the dogs were allegedly being held for dog fighting,” said HSUS Investigator Janette Reever.

The sheriffs department, animal control, and the Humane Society then came went to Ushry’s property on Florence Rd. and when they went around back they found the dogs.

“Some of them had scarring, there were dogs that had some injuries to them and we did find quite a bit of dog fighting paraphernalia at the property as well,” explained Reever.

Seventeen dogs were rescued, all American pit-bull terriers.

Deputies say Ushry was also selling dogs online. The homepage of his website says “we do not sell dogs for illegal purposes.”

Ushry has not yet been arrested but deputies say they are organizing the evidence and hope to press charges in a couple of days.

“I can tell you that we have charged people with less evidence that we successfully brought prosecution too and has been charged,” said Reever.

Reever says she’s just glad the dogs are now safe from any more fights.

“They’re comfortably resting in the air conditioning and they have toys and soft places to lay down, so they’re happy right now,” Reever said.

She says she’s optimistic that the dogs can move on from this and soon become regular household pets.
