DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. - The National Weather Service never confirmed an actual tornado off of Highway 403, but the people living here think otherwise.
"I thought it was just a straight powerful wind but some people think it was a tornado. I don't know what it was,” said Duplin County resident Reggy Carter.
Trees split in half littered the road and utility workers spent most to the afternoon fixing downed power lines.
Carter says the storm snuck up on everyone.
"I was just out here in the yard and the wind started picking up and it got stronger and stronger and it blew my house boat over,” said Carter.
But the damage didn't stop at just his boat. He went out to check on the downed trees in his yard when he realized they were the least of his worries.
The wind had destroyed his shop.
"When I saw it was a done deal it just worried me,” said Carter.
The cement walls were crushed, and the roof ended up on the ground.
Carter says he used his old welding shop for storage and estimates the damage at close to $60,000.
The Rones Chapel community of Duplin County has quite a bit of clean up to do but people in the area are just happy no one was hurt.
