RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - In the first daylight after Hurricane Irene exited North Carolina, officials are getting some idea of the effects of the massive storm.
State emergency management officials say swift water rescue teams rescued 76 people in Beaufort, while another nine were rescued overnight in Northampton County. As of early Sunday, about 225 roads are closed, along with 21 bridges. And more than 525,000 customers are without power.
More than 4,600 people sought safe haven in 56 shelters, most of them in Beaufort County.
Officials also are adding to the number of deaths blamed on the storm, with a woman in Sampson County killed when a tree fell on her car. The toll now stands at three deaths blamed directly on the storm.
Irene made landfall Saturday morning near Cape Lookout.
