TARBORO, N.C. (WNCT) – What was supposed to be a fun trip to New York turns into a major disappointment for one group of travelers from the east.
Nine On Your Side got a tip that 54 passengers were stranded in Virginia for hours after their bus broke down en route to New York. But they all say that’s not why they’re upset.
One passenger said the owner of “Goldsboro Bus Company” told everyone a new bus would take them to New York, but when that bus arrived the story quickly changed.
"A football team had already chartered a bus and they felt like if they switched buses on them that it would jinx their game,” she said.
Instead the bus took them back to Goldsboro. Most had taken off from work. Some even had family waiting for them in the city. But they say what’s most frustrating is the way they were treated.
"The bus driver kept calling me “lady.” I'd ask him a question and he'd be like lady I don't know you'll have to call the office lady,” said passenger Angie Barnes.
Nine on Your Side tracked down the owner of Goldsboro Bus Company, George Scott. The only way we could get an interview with him was if we didn’t show his face. He says he never promised the group that they would get to New York.
"That was never discussed from the beginning. I was telling them that we were going to try to get some help in the surrounding area to get the alternator repaired. It's not about money it's about safety,” Scott said.
He says the bus that came to pick up the group was already reserved for someone else so it could not continue on to New York.
It’s also written in his policy that if there’s a mechanical problem, he isn’t responsible or required to refund money. But after we talked with him for awhile, Scott said he would refund the group’s money.
Scott says he apologizes for any inconveniences and that he will talk to the bus drivers about the way the passengers were treated. He says if the group wants to go to New York again he will give them a discounted rate.
