GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A teenager is in custody, charged with the murder of 18-year-old Demetrius Boone.

Greenville Police say the US Marshall's Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 17-year-old Calvin King last night.

It was back in December that someone shot and killed 18-year old Demetrius Boone or "Deejay" as he was known by loved ones.

Police say Boone was shot after a fight broke out at a party at the Pirates Cove apartments.

They suspected the group involved may have been in a gang and this case along with other shootings led to the creation of a gang task force between several law enforcement agencies.

17-year old Calvin King was picked up last night and is being held at Pitt County Detention Center.

Police say the case is still under investigation and more arrest may be made.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Pitt-Greenville Crime Stoppers at (252) 758-7777.

---Previous Story, Update: GPD laying out plan to combat violent crime in wake of weekend shooting---

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A deadly weekend shooting at student apartment complex "Pirates Cove" is Greenville's fifth homicide in less than two months.

Police say it happened after a group of about 10 to 12 Crip gang members showed up at a birthday party at the complex on East Tenth Street.

A fight broke out when the group didn't pay the two-dollar cover charge to get in and that's when shots were fired.

Greenville Police Chief William Anderson is laying out a plan to combat the violent crime.

Three of the most recent homicides took place at parties at different apartment complexes near East Carolina University.

Police say the problem is students who live there are inviting trouble and they don't even realize it.

For ECU students, it's come to this.

"I don't feel safe coming home at night because there are lots of people hanging out in the streets that look like they're up to no good," said Meredith Clark, who lives near Pirates Cove. "Some of the folks that are associated, some of them live in Grifton.”

Sgt. Carlton Williams it working with Chief William Anderson to form a countywide task force.

They want law officers from surrounding towns and Sheriff Neil Elks to come together to target known gang leaders.

They'll meet with managers of student apartment complexes to come up with stricter policies.

Williams said marijuana has been found at many parties where violence has occurred, “Yes, that is a illegal drug, but you know for a lot of college kids they don't recognize that.  They just think of it as, it's ok to do that kind of stuff, but ultimately when you start mixing drugs, alcohol and then bring in a criminal factor as well, it causes an issue."

Students of all ages say the weekend shooting is a wake-up call.

"No, I don't feel safe here," said Anthony Robinson, Pirates Cove Resident.

"I don't go to the parties here in Pirates Cove just because it's had its reputation too and obviously, but this can also happen anywhere.  It doesn't matter what complex it is.  It can happen anywhere," said Emily Gibbings, Pirates Cove Resident.

Greenville Pastor James Corbett wants to help police stop crime.  He said too often people place blame on parents or schools, “Then they say it's the church or they say it's the police department.  Why don't all of us take our share of the blame and let's work together for a solution?"

Police formed a task force over the summer to thwart gang activity.  But it's back.  And people want a permanent solution.

Police have two persons of interest in the Pirates Cove shooting.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – One man is dead and another injured after a party turned violent at a Greenville student apartment complex.

Police say  around 12:40 Sunday morning a group described as “Crip Gang Members” tried to force their way into a party at Pirates Cove Apartments. That’s when a fight broke out and shots were fired.

18-year-old Demetrius Boone was shot and killed. Another victim received a puncture wound.  The extent of his injuries are unknown.

Police say they have to persons of interest in the case.

It’s the 4th homicide in Greenville in the past 3 weeks and one of several violent incidents at student apartment complexes.

In the past two months three people were shot and another stabbed to death, all at student apartments.

We tried to talk to students who lived at Pirates Cove to see how they felt but were kicked off the property by management so we went to a nearby complex.

"It can be a little scary sometimes. Sometimes I feel that Greenville police should be out patrolling that more than out patrolling downtown area,” said one student.

This week Greenville Police Chief, William Anderson says he plans to meet with other department chiefs across Pitt County as well as the sheriff to develop a new plan to target known gang members.

"I think we have a gang problem in Pitt County. We are not putting this task force together soley because of these recent incidents,”

He says it’s an increasing problem.

Anderson also plans to meet with owners and managers of apartment complexes.

"We're losing absolutely too many young men to violent crime in our community and the police department cannot be the only group that's actively investigating - it has to be a community effort.”
