GREENVILLE, N.C. - When people are in times of trouble, they often go to their church for help.
Now several churches in the Greenville area have become the target of crime.
They were broken into over the weekend.
Just like its name, Peace Presbyterian Church in Winterville is a place of peace.
But over the weekend, a thief or thieves threw a piece of concrete through a window to get in, then made off with 4 TV's, several cameras, a laptop, and other computer stuff.
They’re all items that will need to be replaced.
“You take an organization that exists for compassion and responding to people in need and take from them resources that may have been available to help others,” said Rev. Paul Lang, Peace Presbyterian Church.
Pastor Paul Lang said the church has an alarm system, but that it wasn't turned on when the break-in happened.
Across town, St. James Methodist Church was also hit.
Communications Director Alan Gill said the thief or thieves took a grate and tossed it through a back door to get in, “Not sure why anyone would want to do that but obviously they were desperate and felt like it was a place for them to find some things.”
Once they started to move around though, the security alarm went off.
“We were very fortunate that the security system scared them away,” said Gill.
With Christianity, church is looked at as God's home. So some view stealing from the church as stealing from God.
“But your heart goes out to them too that they would feel so desperate that they would need to do that,” said Gill.
“Whether you're stealing from the rich or the poor or from God or whomever, taking what doesn't belong to you is not going to bring you happiness. You may think it will, but it doesn't,” said Lang.
Police are still investigating.
