JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Every 15 minutes someone in the U.S. dies from a drunk driving accident. Camp Lejeune is taking a real life approach to educating it's Marines about the dangers of drinking and driving.
The Second Maintenance Battalion looked like a casting call for a zombie movie, but it's Marines were playing dead for a reason. The battalion put on a presentation about the dangers of driving under the influence.
Every 15 minutes, Marines were pulled from their duty stations and classified as 'the walking dead' to simulate how often someone is killed by a drunk driver.
They were not allowed to work or talk to anyone, which put more stress on others in their departments.
The battalion also staged a four vehicle accident, complete with fire trucks and emergency services to illustrate just how deadly drinking and driving can be.
Participants in the crash were taken to the Naval Hospital aboard the base.
The entire accident scene and trips to the hospital were filmed to show the battalion what happens in the emergency room after an accident.
Tomorrow, Lejeune will have a memorial service, complete with a 21 gun salute for each of the Marines that were classified as dead in the crash to further emphasize the dangers of driving while intoxicated.
