GOLDSBORO, N.C. - The Wayne County Health Department says people who went to a Goldsboro yogurt shop a couple of weeks ago may have been exposed to Hepatitis A.
Carolyn King of the Wayne County Health Department says that a worker at the Fruity Yogurt shop in Goldsboro has Hepatitis A and that up to 50 people may have been exposed to the disease when she last worked on December 7th.
“Normally most people get through Hepatitis A even if they are never treated. Most people don't go on to have problems with it. However, if you have a compromised immunodeficiency issues, then it could be serious,” said King.
Dave Yang, who is the owner of the Fruity Yogurt, said the woman worked the cash register that day. He said he had no idea at the time that she was sick.
The health department says if you have any of the symptoms and you were at the Fruity Yogurt shop on the 7th you need to see your doctor.
“You may develop symptoms of nausea, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, darker urine, yellowing of the skin,” said King, who added the best way to prevent the spread of this disease is by using some soap and water, especially after going to the bathroom. “We encourage people to wash their hands really well after you visit the restroom and wash you hands with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Washing your hands and rinsing them really well is very important so that you don't transmit something you might not know you have.”
If you did eat at the Fruity Yogurt shop on December 7th and have your Hepatitis A vaccine already, you don't need to worry.
The Wayne County Health Department is offering Hepatitis A vaccines Wednesday only because the vaccine is only effective up until 2 weeks after exposure to the disease.
They're giving them out until 6 p.m.
