LEGGETT, N.C. (WNCT) -- Five people are in the hospital after a fire destroyed a century-old home early Monday morning in Leggett.
Fire Chief Mike Shearin tells us they got the call around 3:00 a.m. Monday to a three story house fire off Highway 33. That house is known as the Arthur Fountain House.
Eight fire departments responded and the fire took more than 11 hours to put out.
Officials tell Nine on Your Side the victims had second and third degree burns to their feet and backs. All five victims are being treated at the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill. Their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
The homeowner was trying to sell the house and believes smoke detectors saved their lives.
Crews tell us the home is a total loss.
The home was built in 1918 on a 700 acre family farm. Preservation North Carolina said the home was one of the state’s best Classical Revival mansions.
