FORT MACON, N.C. - With Christmas over and the new year just a few days away, some of us are starting to take down decorations. But instead of setting that tree on the curb, you can use it to help the environment.
Fort Macon State Park wants your Christmas tree.
The park uses the trees to help catch sand on dunes to keep them from eroding.
Fort Macon's been building dunes with discarded Christmas trees since the '60s, but many of this year's trees will be used to buld areas of the beach eroded by Hurricane Irene.
On average, the park gets about 1500 trees each year.
Along the beach, you cans see trees put down years ago, still at work
People we spoke with visiting the beach say using trees to save the beach is better than throwing them out with the trash.
Some of the dunes are built entirely on Christmas trees, and next year one of them could be yours.
Onslow Beach, Hammock's Beach State Park also use trees to stabilize their sand dunes. If you are taking your tree to one of these locations, be sure to remove all ornaments and lights.
