GREENVILLE, N.C. - A former ECU student accused of shooting his father to death pleaded guilty in court Monday.
26-year-old Kevin Kleberappeared before a judge in a Pitt County Superior Court for sentencing.
Kevin Kleber first told police that it was an armed robber who shot his father.
It happened at the University Park apartments back in January of 2011.
For two days police were looking for the man Kleber says tried to rob him and his father. After further digging, detectives found out it was all a lie, and prosecutors say "lying" may have been the ultimate motive for the shooting.
They say Kleber had told several lies to his parents, that he had a job, that he was still a student, when in fact he had dropped out, and that he had a job lined up at Disney World in Florida.
His father was coming to help him move and that's when the prosecution says in an act of desperation and panic of his family learning the truth, he shot his father.
It was a very emotional courtroom. His mother, sister, and brother were all present.
At the end, Kleber told the judge, "To the court, Greenville Police Department, the community, his friends, and most of all his family he is profoundly sorry."
The defense didn't argue against the facts of the case. They just asked the judge to lower the sentencing, taking into consideration the fact that Kleber admitted guilt, and had the support of his family.
The judge sentenced him to a minimum of 112 months and a maximum of 144 months in prison, with credit for the time he has served.
"The whole case is a tragedy for the leber family and the community at large. The loss of a father and the incarceration of a son, there's no winners or losers in this case," said Sgt. Joe Friday with Greenville Police Department.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Police say it's unusual in this area to see a child kill one of their own parents, but they are certain they have the right man behind bars.
In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Police Chief William Anderson says even after Kevin Kleber admitted to shooting his father in the head, they had to be sure before convicting him. He says that's why it took them so long to charge him for the murder that happened back in January. Chief Anderson says because Kleber provided several false reports, they had to have more than just his testimony for evidence.
Kleberis charged with killing his father Roy Kleber at the University Park Apartments in Greenville. He's in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $2.5 million dollar bond.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A newly released 911 tape paints a picture of what happened the day 55-year-old Roy Kleber was shot and killed.
Yesterday, Greenville Police told us the victim's son, 25-year-old Kevin Kleber admitted to shooting his father.
But before that, Kleber told police a man walked in his University Park apartment and shot his father on the morning of January 9th. Kleber even gave police a description of the suspect.
That's the same fabricated story he told a 911 dispatcher the morning of the shooting.
911 Dispatch: “Pitt County 911."
Kevin Kleber: "(breathing heavy)....He shot he shot my father."
911 Dispatch: "Okay, is someone shot, sir?"
Kevin Kleber: "Yes, someone's shot. He shot at me…I…”
911 Dispatch: "Okay sir, I need you to calm down."
911 Dispatch: "Is the assailant still nearby?"
Kevin Kleber: "No, he went out the door."

GREENVILLE, N.C. - A son who admitted he killed his father is only charged with felony obstruction of justice and is out of jail.
Police say 25-year-old Kevin Kleber completely fabricated the description of a suspect in the shooting at an apartment complex in Greenville, causing him to be charged with obstruction of justice.
On Sunday morning police got a call of a shooting at University Park apartments on 10th street. That's where they found 55-year-old Roy Kleber, shot to death.
"Regarding the suspect information and sequence of events resulting in Mr. Kleber's death, [it] was fabricated and no such suspect exists," said William Anderson, Greenville Police Chief.
It's a turn in a case that changes the face of the man police believed to be involved in an early morning homicide.
Police revealed during a mid-morning news conference that the suspect composite is a fake, existing only in the mind of Kevin Kleber. His story of a man entering his apartment and shooting his father was, simply, untrue.
"We have a lot of information but keep in mind that the only information we have right now is being provided by our suspect," said Chief Anderson.
A hindrance in the case, as Kevin Keebleris also the only witness, a man that admitted to shooting his father in the neck with a 9 millimeter handgun.
"Whether he intended to kill his father or exactly what happened, we still have to determine that," said Chief Anderson.
Friends of Kevin say it all doesn't fit.
"Family and friends always came first with Kevin and to hear that something like this could happen, you just don't want to believe it and I really don't think Kevin would do that," said Jarred Mertz, who went to East Carolina University with Kevin.
For police, felony obstruction of justice is just the beginning.
"We want to makes sure that when we charge this individual, not if we charge him, but when we charge this individual, we are charging him with the appropriate charges," said Chief Anderson.
Police have yet to rule out whether or not this shooting was done accidental or on purpose, something they say will need further investigation.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Greenville Police reveal a startling turn in a homicide investigation during a mid-morning news conference.
Police now say the sketch released Monday of who they believed to be a suspect in an early morning homicide was completely fabricated.
Kevin Kleber, the son of the victim, Roy Kleber, was the one who supplied police with the description. Now, Kleberis charged with felony obstruction of justice.
This past Sunday morning, police were called to the scene at University Park where they found Roy Klebershot to death.
Police confirm Roy Kleber was helping his son move to Florida for a new job and they had just finished packing when neighbors heard shots rang out. Kleber told police a man entered the apartment and shot his father.
Today, police ruled that out.
"Detectives have determined that Roy Kleber and Kevin Kleber were the only individuals present when the incident occurred and Kevin Kleber fired the fatal shot that killed his father," said William Anderson, Greenville Police Chief.
Another interesting development in the case is that Kevin Kleberadmits to shooting is father. But police have yet to charge him with the murder.
They say the only real witness is Kevin who, of course, is their suspect.
But they say they'll continue to work with the DA and expect charges to come.
We'll have more tonight at 6.

Neighbors say he was there helping his son move on with his life.
"It's never been this kind of thing. It's kind of a shocker to me," said Ben Liboon, a resident at University Park apartments. “I never see cops cars around here. It's a pretty safe place, I'd say."
"About six something I heard one big noise. I didn't know it was a shot. I went to the restroom and while I was in the restroom I heard a second one," said Gary Kevorkyn, another resident of University Park.
That's where police found 55-year-old Roy Klebershot to death in his son's third floor apartment.
"I talked with them about 30 minutes yesterday. The conversation was completely positive," said Kevorkyn.
He says they were talking about moving. Kleber was helping his son Kevin, a recent ECU graduate, move to a new job in Orlando, Florida.
"I talked to him yesterday and asked if he needs help for relocation and he told me he's OK because his dad came yesterday to help him," said Kevorkyn, who lived in the apartment next to where Kleber was found dead.
Kevorkyn says the two planned to load the trucks early Sunday morning and head out, but what exactly happened between the time they loaded the trucks and Kleber's death isn't clear.
"The only reason I'm surprised is that the shots were a part away, about five minutes or so away from each other which makes me think, 'why is it?'" said Kevorkyn.
He says he saw Kleber's son taken away in a police car, but police have not listed him or anyone else as a suspect.
For now, the moving trucks left behind, aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
