SC senators to debate allowing poker

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina senators are considering whether to legalize friendly games of poker.

A proposal set for debate Tuesday in the Senate Judiciary Committee would update the state's 1802 anti-gambling laws which bans any games with cards or dice.

Legislators have tried to change the laws since a 2006 raid on a poker game in Mount Pleasant. But their attempts have failed repeatedly. Some legislators and religious groups have fought making any change to gambling laws, saying they fear it will usher in far more than kitchen-table poker.

Last week, the committee endorsed legislation letting voters decide if schools, churches and other nonprofit groups should be able to hold raffles. Gambling opponents say they're not as concerned about legalizing raffles.
