TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. - A ten year old Pennsylvania girl is recovering this afternoon after she was attacked by a shark while standing in just three feet of water at a beach here in the east.
Cassidy Cartwright was with her family at Topsail Beach this past Sunday when she says she was suddenly taken under while wading in the shallow water.
Her mother describes what happened as "bloody".
Cassidy was rushed to the hospital and then later airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Her mother says her number one fear was that the she could lose her leg.
Fortunately though, doctors were able to save her leg, but she did have several torn tendons.
It will take several months before she makes a full recovery.
Cassidy says people need to know that it can happen and to use extra caution this holiday weekend at the beach.
