One killed, another injured in Wilson County accident

WILSON, N.C. - A one car collision this morning killed the driver and sent a passenger to the hospital.

It happened just before 4 a.m. on US 264 Alternate near NC 58 and RP 1503.

Troopers said a 1997 Nissan pick-up truck traveling west ran off the road to the right, striking a culvert. It caused the vehicle to overturn and the driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

The driver died at the scene while the passenger was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers said that speed was a contributing factor to the collision and alcohol impairment is suspected.

The driver was identified as 52-year-old Michael Jerome Smith of Wilson. The passenger was identified as 41-year-old Timothy E. Speight.
