MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - An assisted living center in the east will have to pay thousands of dollars in penalties after a deadly Hepatitis outbreak prompted a review last year.

Glen Care Assisted Living Center in Mount Olive must pay a $16,000 penalty. The penalty was officially imposed this week and the center has been notified.

An investigation began last year after eight patients tested positive for Hepatitis B infection. Six of them died.

State health officials found problems like unsafe sharing of blood testing equipment.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - An assisted living center in the east may have to pay thousands of dollars in penalties after a deadly Hepatitis outbreak prompted a review last year.

Today, a penalty review committee voted to recommend a $16,000 penalty proposal for Glen Care Assisted Living.

The recommendation will be sent to the adult care section chief, who will decide whether to impose the penalty.

An investigation began last year after eight patients tested positive for Hepatitis B infection; six of them died.

State health officials found problems like unsafe sharing of blood glucose monitoring equipment.

The center was ordered to implement new procedures to meet safety standards following the outbreak.
