ATLANTIC BEACH, NC - Construction on an Atlantic Beach pool came to a halt after crews found a piece of a plane, six feet underground.

"The phone's been ringing off the hook," said Chris Cash, owner of Cash Pools.

It certainly wasn't a normal day on the job for Cash who's been installing pools for the last 30 years.

"It was right here in this lower corner about six feet below the grass line," said Cash.

Cash and his team were digging a hole for a new pool when they dug up, what they say is, a piece of history.  They found what looks like a piece of an airplane, wedged in the sand closest to the deep end of the pool.

"Actually, I didn't see it.  I was operating machinery, digging, and one of the workers found it and put it on the deck up there and when we got done I looked at it and decided to take it the shop," said Cash.

Holly Martin and her husband who are currently renting the vacation home where the pool is being installed said they were a little let down to not have the pool ready in time for their vacation, but this little discovery makes up for it.

"I didn't expect to find a piece of history in our back yard, literally, while we're here.  That's a little surprising in a good way!" said Martin.

And the Martins won't be getting their pool anytime soon as officials with the Town of Atlantic Beach have put a stop work order on the construction until it can be investigated.

"It is a little strange, you know, finding an airplane where you want to put a pool, but they've found stranger things," said Donna Turner, Atlantic Beach Inspections Director.

Stranger things like, for example, another piece believe to be of an airplane found at a neighbor's house when they were installing their pool.

The Navy will be conducting an investigation of the area and hopefully uncover new details about this piece of what's believed to be an airplane here in the coming days.
