GREENVILLE, NC- The driver of a car involved in a fatal accident in Greenville has been cited for driving while impaired. Police found 18-year-old Chahid Omar Solamen at his Rodney Road home. That's where officers believe he went after walking away from the accident--- and from the four teen aged passengers who were riding along with him. The accident was reported to 911 just before six o'clock this morning.
Law enforcement officers say Solamen was driving east on fifth street when it crossed the center line of the road and overturned. Taylor Weiss, 22-years-old, was killed. Their identity has not been released.17-year-old Genna Browning suffered minor injuries, 18-year-olds Emma Arny and Nora Sugar are both in serious but stable condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital. For hours Greenville Police stood watch at the scene of Friday morning's accident.
“It just crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road... Obviously struck the fence you can see behind me, overturned, and then came to a rest,” said Lt. Rob Williams of the Greenville Police Department.
According to officers, five people were traveling in the two-door Nissan Altima. It ended up on the edge of Greenwood Cemetery. The five passengers were scattered in many directions: one dead, two thrown from the car, one left in search of help, while the driver---authorities say-- just walked away.
Greenville Police arrived at the accident shortly after it happened. They spent much of the day trying to figure out exactly what caused it. Officers used a series of measurements to recreate the accident. While they worked, drivers trying to navigate through the area-- near two schools were turned away.
“We got turned around. We seen a couple cars get turned around and we were like what are people doing?” said Christian Paden.
“We go that way everyday and ugh we just seen a line of cars. It wasn't just us. It was more than one; there was actually a line,” added Matthuw Lovins.
While it proved inconvenient for drivers, it was necessary for officers hoping to determine what lead to the fatal accident.
“After Saint Patrick's Day; after a holiday it's just always hard to hear,” said Lovins.
With criminal charges now likely-- officers say their investigation is just getting starting. Officers reopened Fifth Street just before four this afternoon. The 18-year-old driver was taken PCMH where he is being treated for injuries he sustained during the accident. A blood sample from the driver is being submitted to the SBI for analysis.
