ECU streaker expected in court Monday

John Douglas Sieglinger

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The man known arrested for streaking across the field at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium in November is expected in court Monday.

John Sieglinger, from Wake County, dropped his pants and ran across the field during halftime of the November 5 home game against Southern Miss. The incident happened during a military tribute ceremony.

Sieglinger wasn't the only one who came under fire over the incident.

The East Carolinian, ECU’s student-run newspaper, landed in hot water after publishing un-censored pictures of the incident on its front page the following Tuesday.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Those being honored during ECU's military appreciation ceremony at last Saturday's football game got just the opposite.

A streaker was apprehended without incident and police are calling it a job-well-done for their security plan, but photos show security personnel weren't the first to make contact with him on the field.

21-year-old John Sieglinger of Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh was charged with indecent exposure and 1st degree trespassing.

Nine on Your Side wanted to know what kind of security plan has an athletic official getting to the streaker before trained security personnel?

It's all very situational.  That's what ECU Police Chief Scott Shelton told us about apprehending anyone that runs onto Bagwell Field.

He wasn't available for an on-camera interview but said over the phone that his team, along with other security personal, reviews their security plan before and after every event.

It’s a statement backed by an official media release calling it a "multi-level security plan."

One that was easily thwarted by a naked 21-year-old during a time meant to honor the military and its veterans.

Viewer submitted video lead Nine on Your Side to question if every staff member was filled in on that security plan.  The video shows 21-year-old Sieglinger running past two staff members.

In fact, they just kept walking.

Staff-1, the security company contracted by ECU, did not return our calls about those staff members.

Chief Shelton told us the event staff is not as trained as officers or deputies at safely taking down an individual, hence why they won't run onto the field, but photos show it was an ECU athletic official that got to Sieglinger first.

Shelton says law enforcement holds back and doesn't immediately rush the field in order to assess the situation.

He says the last thing they want is to be chasing a naked 21-year-old for 50 yards, especially while those who deserve to be honored are looking on, something "the university deeply regrets."

Sieglinger did apologize on his facebook page for those he offended.

ECU has since banned him from all future university events by issuing a “lifetime trespass warning for ECU property” to Sieglinger.

Sieglinger is charged with indecent exposure and trespassing.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - School officials still aren't talking after a streaker took to the field during the Pirate's game against Southern Miss Saturday.

21-year-old John Douglas Sieglinger was charged with first degree trespassing and indecent exposure. He was released from custody.

Authorities tell us those at the game saw him running naked onto the field at halftime during a military tribute ceremony.

We tried contacting school officials to confirm where Douglas is from or if he has ties to the university.

The school has not returned our calls.
