HALIFAX, N.C. (AP) - Halifax County parents who don't make an effort to get their kids to school could find themselves behind bars.

The Daily and Sunday Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports (http://bit.ly/rpkMF4 ) that a new collaboration between the county courts, public schools and other agencies aims to hold parents accountable for students' attendance.

A truancy court session will now be held once a month, with the first scheduled for Nov. 29.

If a student logs more than six unexcused absences, parents will be notified they could be prosecuted if the absences can't be explained.

After more than 10 absences, the district attorney's office will be notified. Parents convicted of the misdemeanor could face up to 120 days in jail.

Officials say the goal is to get kids in school.
