WILSON, N.C. (AP) - The Wilson County Humane Society says animal control ordinances need to be enforced better, pointing to a case where neighbors complained eight times this year about conditions at a house from which animals were later seized.
Sheriff Calvin Woodard says the case was handled correctly and balked at the Humane Society's suggestion to set up a committee of deputies and rescue groups to protect animals.
Both sides talked Monday to county commissioners about the issue, which came to a head after authorities seized two horses, a donkey and a goat from a home. Neighbors say they complained eight times since January about crowded living conditions, emaciated animals and carcasses on the property.
Anne Pression of the Humane Society says authorities aren't following ordinances.
